How to manually setup Lotus Notes plugin for Google Desktop

You can search IBM Lotus Notes through your google desktop. IBM has provided a dll plugin for this search mechanism.

Google Desktop for Enterprise will install the dll as part of its installation

If you're using Google Desktop for Enterprise and it's not indexing your Lotus Notes, the Lotus Notes component was probably not fully installed.

To successfully install the Lotus Notes module, the program requires that "notesgdsplugin.dll" is written to the Notes application directory, and a specific entry referencing it is added to the "notes.ini" configuration file.

The most likely cause of a failed installation is that the installer was not able to locate the notes.ini file. The installation should successfully complete if you close Notes and manually add the following entry on a new line within the "notes.ini" configuration file:

AddinMenus=notesgdsplugin.dll

If the notesgdsplugin.dll file is not in the default application directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes) after installing Google Desktop, it's likely that Notes was not installed correctly.

Here are the steps you need to take

1)       Copy notesgdsplugin.dll to your Notes application directory
2)       Update the Notes.ini file (should be in your Notes application directory) and add AddinMenus=notesgdsplugin.dll to the file.

If there already exists an entry to the AddinMenus, you can string values together by separating with a comma
Example
AddInMenus=NCMenu, notesgdsplugin.dll

3)       The next time Notes starts up, it will read this file and be instructed to add the notesgdsplugin.dll to the application. You will be prompted with the following message during startup

Click OK

Under Notes Actions menu, you will now see “Google Desktop for Notes”

When click on this menu item, it will start the process to begin indexing your files

NOTE: Google Desktop ONLY works for local mail files. This means that you need to replicate the mail file locally first. It will not work against a mail file that resides on the Domino server !

For instructions on replication – see below

When intitating the indexing of the mail file, you will be prompted with two warnings

Click OK for both

On the following window, you will be asked to add your LOCAL mail file

Once you click ok, the file will be indexed and added as search results to queries you submit through Google desktop.

To check on the success of the install of the Notes plugin for google desktop, go to the google desktop preferences and look at “indexing plugins”
